Thirteen years ago, a farmer in British Columbia replaced two hectares of alfalfa with ginseng. Since then production has doubled and tripled. Long fabled for for strengthening the body, the memory and the immune system, ginseng also stimulates the economy. Dried ginseng fetches a staggering $100 per kilo, or ablut $34,000 a hectare, many times what alfalfa could generate.
